When relationships break down grandparents, who have been a major part of the children’s lives, are sometimes denied any contact. 42% of grandparents lose contact with their grandchildren when their parents separate. The courts have noted that contact with a grandparent may be beneficial for children but often it is necessary to start legal proceedings to get contact going again.
