Although dogs naturally form close bonds with humans, there are many ways in which we can enhance these relationships. When we have clear channels of communication, it becomes much easier to ‘train’ our dogs and teach them useful and fun behaviours. Without communication or relationship it is unlikely that ‘training’ will be very successful from human or canine perspectives.
When a dog displays what we see as inappropriate/naughty or unwanted behaviours, there is always a reason for it – from the dog’s point of view! Taking into account why the dog chooses this behaviour, and what we might want in its place, the guardian is ready to implement a training programme.

Dogs can experience pain, tension and discomfort just as humans, therefore the same physical therapy techniques can be helpful. If a dog is in pain, it is likely to be grumpy, reactive and less tolerant than usual. It can be difficult even for vets to determine if an animal is in pain, but massage therapy, myofascial release and acupressure can be valuable supportive treatments. These techniques are also useful for nervous, anxious animals who may in some sense ‘store’ these tensions within their physical body. Teaching guardians how to perform simple massage can also be a great bonding technique.

I am strongly committed to using non-confrontational methods, basing my approach to training and bodywork on sound underlying principles, and continuing to reflect on the client’s progress.
