HealthWORKS Newcastle (formerly the West End Health Resource Centre) opened in May 1996 following a period of extensive consultation with health and social care professional, key decision makers, community organisations and local people. The catalyst for this exercise came from the impending demolition of Benwell shopping centre, which housed Adelaide Medical Practice. The whole exercise took six years of dialogue to enable professionals and local people to agree a proposal to meet local need and to undertake a feasibility study and then business plan to attract funding for the project.

In 1998 the West End Health Resource Centre was named as an example of a ‘Healthy Living Centre’ in the two Government papers ‘The New NHS’ and ‘Our Healthier Nation’. We are proud of our achievements in such a short period of time and recognize the ‘leap of faith’ required to invest in preventative work with a focus on keeping healthy no matter what our health problems may be.
In 2011 the Lemington Centre merged with us allowing us an extra resource to further our aims.
