The Modesto Play It Again Sports store was opened in July of 1991 by Ed and Mary Vargas. The business thrived, and in December of 1993, they opened the Turlock store. Our current owner, John Vargas, began at the Modesto store at the age of 16, after school and on the weekends. After graduating from Ceres High School, John attended Modesto Junior College, during which time he managed the Turlock store while completing his general education.

Having a passion for business, in 1997 John completed a business plan for his own store. He then negotiated the purchase of the Turlock Play It Again Sports from Ed and Mary. With little capital, and lots of determination, John quickly grew the Turlock store and in May of 2001, purchased the Modesto store. After many 80-Hour work weeks, John decided to focus his efforts into one store, and sold the Turlock store to Erin and Lorna Davis, who he works with regularly. John is proud to serve his customers, and enjoys the many relationships he has made during his 17 years in the business.
